Las Vegas hosts some of the largest trade shows in the world, and a significant share of attendees travel from outside the United States. If you are coming from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, or elsewhere, here is what you need to know before you arrive — practical information that goes beyond the standard travel advice.
Visas and Entry Requirements
Citizens of 42 countries can enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA) for stays of up to 90 days. You must apply for ESTA authorization online before you travel — it costs $21 and approval is usually instant. If your country is not on the VWP list, you will need a B-1 business visa, which requires an embassy appointment well in advance of your travel date.
Trade show attendance qualifies as a legitimate business visit for both ESTA and B-1 visa purposes. Keep your trade show registration confirmation with you when you pass through US Customs.
Money and Payments
The US dollar is used everywhere in Las Vegas. Major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) are accepted at virtually all hotels, restaurants, and taxis. Notify your bank before travel to avoid fraud blocks on international transactions.
- ATMs are widely available — airport and casino ATMs charge higher fees ($5 to $8), so use bank ATMs when possible
- Tipping is standard in the US: 18 to 20% at restaurants, $2 to $5 per bag for hotel porters, $5 to $10 per night for housekeeping
- Sales tax in Nevada is around 8.375% and is not included in displayed prices — your actual bill will be higher than the menu price
Mobile Connectivity
International roaming costs vary significantly. The most practical option for a 4 to 7 day trade show trip is a US SIM card or an eSIM. US carriers T-Mobile and AT&T offer prepaid SIMs with unlimited data for $30 to $50, available at the airport or any major pharmacy. Alternatively, providers like Airalo offer eSIMs you can activate before departure without needing a physical card.
Convention center WiFi during large shows is often congested — a reliable mobile data connection is more valuable than it might seem when you need to pull up a floor map or contact sheet between meetings.
Jet Lag and Time Zone Management
Las Vegas operates on Pacific Time (UTC-8 in winter, UTC-7 in summer during daylight saving). If you are traveling from Europe, you are typically 8 to 9 hours behind Las Vegas. From Asia, you are 15 to 17 hours ahead.
Arrive at least one full day before the show opens if your schedule allows. Trade shows are physically and mentally demanding — starting day one with severe jet lag puts you at a disadvantage. Prioritize sleep over the first evening’s entertainment, and get into Nevada time as fast as possible by staying awake until local bedtime on your first night.
Power and Electronics
The US uses 120V / 60Hz with Type A and Type B plug sockets (two or three flat pins). Most modern laptops and phone chargers are dual-voltage and only need a physical adapter — check your device’s power brick for “100-240V” before you travel. Bring a universal travel adapter. Power strips and extension cords are allowed in carry-on luggage and are useful in hotel rooms where outlet availability is limited.
Health and Insurance
Medical care in the United States is expensive. A single emergency room visit without insurance can cost thousands of dollars. Ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical coverage before you depart — most European travel insurance policies cover this, but verify the limits and the process for emergency claims.
Common over-the-counter medications (ibuprofen, antihistamines, cold relief) are available at CVS and Walgreens pharmacies, which are open 24 hours at several Strip locations.
Cultural Notes for the Convention Floor
- Americans tend to use first names immediately in business contexts — this is normal and not a sign of disrespect
- Small talk before business conversations is common and expected; diving straight into a pitch can feel abrupt
- Business cards are exchanged less formally than in Asian markets — do not expect recipients to study your card carefully
- Punctuality matters — if you schedule a 10am meeting, be there at 9:55

Las Vegas is a well-traveled destination and the Convention Center staff are experienced with international visitors. The practical barriers are mostly logistical — sort out your connectivity, your currency, and your sleep schedule, and you will be ready to make the most of the show.
