How to Survive a Las Vegas Trade Show: 15 Essential Tips

Las Vegas trade shows are intense — 10,000+ steps per day, back-to-back meetings, loud halls, and extreme temperatures outside. Here are 15 essential tips from veterans who’ve attended dozens of shows.

Before You Arrive

1. Book your hotel early

Hotels near the LVCC fill up 3–6 months before major shows. The closer you are, the less energy you waste commuting. Book as soon as show dates are announced.

2. Register in advance

On-site registration costs 2–3x more and lines can take 90+ minutes. Always pre-register online and download your badge to your phone.

3. Plan your schedule

Download the official show app and mark the exhibitors, sessions, and networking events you want to attend. The LVCC is enormous — plan your route by hall to avoid unnecessary walking.

On the Show Floor

4. Wear comfortable shoes

Seriously. Concrete floors for 8+ hours destroy your feet. Bring dedicated trade show shoes — broken-in sneakers or cushioned walking shoes. Never wear new shoes to a trade show.

5. Stay hydrated

Las Vegas air is extremely dry and convention halls are heavily air-conditioned. Drink 2–3 liters of water per day. Carry a reusable water bottle — most halls have water refill stations.

6. Pack light

You’ll collect brochures and swag all day. Bring a lightweight backpack or tote bag. Ship heavy materials back to your hotel — most shows have shipping services on-site.

💡 Pro Tip: Arrive at the show floor 30 minutes before opening on Day 1. It’s the only time you’ll have space to move freely and talk to exhibitors without crowds.

Networking & Meetings

7. Pre-schedule your key meetings

Don’t rely on bumping into people on the show floor. Use LinkedIn or the show’s official app to book 20–30 minute meetings at least 2 weeks before the event. Exhibitors’ calendars fill up fast — especially for CES and MAGIC.

8. Have a one-liner ready

You’ll be asked “what do you do?” hundreds of times. Prepare a crisp 10-second answer that sparks curiosity. Practice it until it sounds natural. First impressions at trade shows happen in seconds.

9. Collect contacts strategically

Most shows now have badge scanning apps — use them instead of paper business cards. Take a quick voice memo right after a meeting while the conversation is fresh. Follow up within 48 hours of the show closing, not weeks later.

Health & Energy Management

10. Eat before you hit the floor

Show floor food is expensive, slow, and often poor quality. Have a solid breakfast at your hotel. Pack protein bars or snacks in your bag for mid-morning energy. Don’t rely on the coffee station line at 9 AM.

11. Protect your voice

Convention halls are loud. You’ll be talking over noise all day, straining your vocal cords. Bring throat lozenges, avoid alcohol the night before big presentation days, and speak from your diaphragm rather than your throat.

12. Take breaks deliberately

Build 20-minute breaks into your schedule every 2–3 hours. Find a quiet corner, sit down, check emails, and recharge mentally. Going non-stop leads to decision fatigue — you’ll miss important conversations in the afternoon if you sprint all morning.

Logistics & After Hours

13. Know your transportation options

Uber and Lyft surge badly at show opening and closing times (often 3–4x). The Las Vegas Monorail runs along the Strip and is often faster than rideshare during peak hours. Some shows also run free official shuttles from major hotels — always check the event’s transportation page.

14. Choose evening events wisely

Trade shows generate an overwhelming number of evening parties, dinners, and networking events. You cannot attend everything — and trying to will destroy you by Day 3. Pick 1–2 events per evening that align with your actual goals, not just the ones with the best catering.

15. Debrief every evening

Before going to sleep, spend 10 minutes writing down your top 3 takeaways of the day, the contacts you need to follow up with, and one thing you’ll do differently tomorrow. This habit alone separates professionals who come home with real outcomes from those who just attended.

💡 Bonus Tip: Book your hotel for one extra night after the show closes. Flying out the same day as closing is stressful and expensive. An extra night lets you follow up on contacts, recover, and often get much cheaper flights the next morning.
